A decade of energy systems research, built into software

Born at the MIT Energy Initiative. Spun out in 2023 to bring scientific rigor to industrial decarbonization.

Our story

Purpose built for a global challenge

Sesame began as a sponsored research project at the MIT Energy Initiative: a comprehensive life-cycle assessment of traditional and emerging energy pathways. That work grew into SESAME — the Sustainable Energy Systems Analysis and Modeling Environment — built over six years by a team of more than thirty researchers with over $7 million in research funding.

Since 2018 the platform has produced over twenty peer-reviewed publications and informed national studies including the National Petroleum Council's Harnessing Hydrogen report and the EFI Foundation's U.S. Hydrogen Infrastructure Action Plan.

In 2023, we licensed the SESAME IP and founded Sesame Sustainability to bring that rigor to industry.
